Importance of Kindergarten education:
There is a view amongst parents that pre school is not so important for their children. It’s common for us to hear “Ill worry about putting my child in a good school from Grade 1 onwards”. Parents are not aware of the fact that 85% of a child’s brain development takes place before the age of 5.
James Heckman, Nobel laureate in economics from University of Chicago says, “We cannot afford to postpone investing in children until they become adults, nor can we wait until they reach school age—a time when it may be too late to intervene. Learning is a dynamic process and is most effective when it begins at a young age and continues through to adulthood.”
Pre school education is the most neglected part of the education system. In many ways it is the most important. A well designed curriculum along with trained staff can make a big difference in the development of a child for success later on in life. Raj Chetty, a researcher at Harvard University researched 12,000 students in Tennessee, US in a study called Project Star and tracked them to age 30.
The findings point that students exposed to good preschool education with high quality teachers are:
LIKELY to complete Higher education
LIKELY to earn higher earnings
LIKELY to have better jobs
They also tend to exhibit greater motivation, discipline, patience, and persistence.
It is important that parents understand the importance of pre school education in that important learning like recognising shapes, drawing, singing and playing with toys are all examples of behaviours your child learns in the first few years of life. They also learn about following family rules, recognising colors, eating by themselves, dressing themselves, etc. This is the basic foundation on which a child’s life builds on.
